When God Doesn't Listen

Passages: Ecclesiastes 5:1; Isaiah 58:4-5; Joshua 7; Acts 5:1-10; 1 Corinthians 5:1-5; Matthew 18:15

God is serious about our commitment to Him. Our prayers must be carefully crafted and come from an obedient heart and an expectant faith. Chan summarizes examples from Scripture where God shows His holiness by punishing sin. The flood and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah indicate His holy wrath. The judgment of Joshua upon the family of Achan shows God's use of His people to carry out His justice. We must be careful to make our own lives pure and pray for the purity of our brothers and sisters in Christ.

The Resurrection: So What?

Passages: 1 Corinthians 15

What are the implications of the resurrection for our lives? How will the Good News of Jesus impact the way you live?

Humble Before God's Greatness

Passages: Numbers 11:31-35; 12:12-16

God's favorite posture is kneeling. Humility is the key to knowing God.Miriam, Moses' sister and Aaron, Moses' brother, questioned God's leadership. Miriam was punished by God and contracted leprosy. Although God healed her, she, like us, learned a powerful lesson in humility. We must never question God's choices, and submit to the authorities He places over us.

Rein in Your Wild Words: Worship God

Passages: Ephesians 4:29-31; 1 Corinthians 3:16-17; Ecclesiates 5:1-2; ! Kings 8

Be careful of your wild, impetuous words, because you are in God's presence. Christians are the temple of God. Don't rush into His presence, come before Him with reverence and awe.

Freedom Found in Faith

Passages: Hebrews 11

Finding faith can transform us. Hebrews 11 teaches us that because we belong to Christ, we can have confidence with God that He will guide our lives, forgive our sins and act on our behalf. Preached at Cornerstone Church, Simi Valley California. Used by permission.

Why Giving Up is Not an Option!

Passages: Selected Scriptures

Francis Chan teaches that in order to live the Christian life you must follow Jesus and not give up. He will strengthen you to make the journey with Him. Though difficult, you will have the grace to follow him no matter how great the obstacles become. Finish the race!

What's So Great About Jesus? (Colossians)

Passages: Colossians 1:1-13

The Apostle Paul commended the Colossian believers for their faith, their love for the saints and their hope of heave. Paul prayed for them to live a life worthy of the Lord, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. Many of us have such a limited view of the love and power of Jesus. When we expand our view of God, our whole life changes and impacts others in a radical way.

Are You Trying Too Hard, or Trusting God's Grace?

Passages: Galatians 1:10-24; Ephesians 5:6-8; 1 Timothy 1:12-17

The Apostle Paul tells his story about how he turned from being proud and religious to being humble and trusting God for his salvation as a free gift. Jesus died on the cross to pay for all of his sin. Receiving God's love and blessing even if you don't deserve it is the meaning of grace. Preached at Cornerstone Church, Simi Valley California. Used by permission.

Silent Night

Passages: John 3:1-23; 1 Peter 1:3-5, 3:15; Romans 3; Colossians 4:2-6

Man's condition before Christ came was hopeless. Jesus, Son of Man and Son of God came to save mankind. Nicodemus, the curious Jewish leader, was told by Christ to be born again. The birth of Christ and the new birth are compared in this evangelistic message.

Be Courageous: Fight for Your Faith!

Passages: 1 Timothy 1:1-5; 6:1-10; Psalm 62

Paul teaches in his first letter to Timothy that we should be humble toward others, cling to the truth and avoid materialism. We should always try to do what is right, to be devoted to God, and to have faith, love, patience, and gentleness. We have to fight to keep our faith.

What Love for God Looks Like

Passages: Deuteronomy 6:5, 1 John 4:19, 1 John 3:16-18, John 13:14, 14:15-31, Psalm 36

Loving God implies obedience. The person who follows God completely will know Him in an intimate way, and God will manifest Himself through the Holy Spirit. The depth of God’s infinite love is known to the Christians walking in the deeper life. Preached at Cornerstone Church, Simi Valley. Used by permission.

Sheep and Goats: God Alone Knows Our Hearts

Passages:

Jesus teaches about the angels separating the sheep (the true followers of Christ) from the goats (the God-rejecters). The sheep were compassionate-feeding the hungry and thirsty, living compassionate, generous lives. And so must we. Preached at Cornerstone Church, Simi Valley California.

I'm in Love: What Prayer is Really All About

Passages: James 5:13-20

We often reduce prayer to a chore or transaction. Prayer is supposed to be the most natural expression of our love for God. Preached at Cornerstone Church, Simi Valley, California. Used by permission.

High-Rollers or Heart-Givers? Living with Urgency Pt. 2

Passages: James 5:1-6

James indicts the rich for using their wealth as a false sense of security. They oppressed the poor by their hoarding and lived in luxury and self-indulgence. He warns of upcoming judgment and the urgency of repentance.  James 5:1-6 Preached at Cornerstone Church, Simi Valley California. Used by permission.

Living with a Sense of Urgency Pt. 1

Passages: isaiah 33:22, Matthew 18:15-17; Colossians 1:28; Titus 3:10; Matthew 25:31-46.

James 4 teaches this: "Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it." Who is the only Lawgiver & Judge? (cf. Isaiah 33:22) There is a difference between “judging” someone and using discernment to “confront” or “warn” someone (cf. Mt. 18:15-17; Col 1:28; Titus 3:10). Mat 25:31-46. When our spiritual brothers and sisters are in sin and we fail to help them, we are responsible to God. Preached at Cornerstone Church, Simi Valley, California.

Castles and Crowns Come Down: Harnessing God's Power

Passages: Romans 6:1-14

Surprisingly, the key to power is in humility and sacrifice. Compassion is God's secret weapon to storm the gates of hell.

On Fire for Jesus

Passages: Revelation 3, 4

Some of you are holding on to something that is killing you. Some of you that are Christian have this sin that you are holding on to. You are not changing. It's just stuck there. It's almost like sometimes you have to wait until your lives hit rock bottom and you collapse before you will do something about it. Lukewarm Christianity is not an option. Francis Chan takes his message for this Men's Retreat at Cornerstone Church, Simi Valley, from Jesus' words to the church at Laodecia.

Breaking Down the Wall of Shame-Psalm 32

Passages: Selected Psalms

Francis Chan teaches on God's heart revealed through David's Psalm 32, a psalm of confession. This wall between us and God is either from a faulty understanding of forgiveness, or a faulty understanding of repentance. David understood this wall. He understood shame and embarrassment when he committed adultery and murder. He also understood what it took to remove the walls. Psalm 32 is his experience and advice. From Cornerstone Church, Simi Valley, California. Used by permission.

Grounded in the Faith: Psalm 1

Passages: Psalm 1

In a marriage ceremony, you are saying “I want to spend the rest of my life with my spouse”. In baptism, you are saying “I want to be in union with God and spend the rest of my life with Him.” It’s God’s desire that you actually want Him.  The picture is of a tree constantly sucking up nourishment from the stream. Its roots are going deeper and the tree is getting stronger. That’s the person who meditates on God’s word day and night. You can’t be watered once a week and expect to survive. www.cornerstonechurchsimivalley.com. Used by permission.

Worship the Greatness of a Galactic God

Passages: Psalm 8

Stunning videos of the universe from the Hubble telescope confirm the picture of a giant incomprehensible God. How could we view ourselves as important when we see His majesty. The little children know how to praise Him. He is the God of great worth! Sermon preached at Cornerstone Church, Simi Valley.
