Mark was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and grew up in Naperville, Illinois. He attended the University of Chicago on a basketball scholarship and majored in pre-law. After a prayer walk through a cow pasture in 1989, he felt called to full-time ministry and ended up at Central Bible College. Mark also holds two graduate degrees from Trinity International University. He serves as lead pastor of National Community Church in Washington, D.C. NCC was recognized as one of the most innovative and most influential churches in America by Outreach Magazine in 2008. Batterson is also the author of the books In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day, Wild Goose Chase and blogs daily at www.evotional.com.
