Hear The Heart of the Abused

Author: Roger Barrier

“Forty-two percent of the women in our church were sexually abused, inappropriately touched, fondled or molested before the age of sixteen!” I couldn’t believe my ears!

Steve and I were leading a women’s conference for 200 women in our church. I’ll never forget the results of an impromptu survey we administered near the end of the final session. We passed out paper and asked the women to answer “yes” or “no” to the question above: “Were you sexually abused … before the age of 16?”

I was stunned by the result! The women were aghast!

Forty-two percent answered, “Yes.”

Later, reflecting on the results, it dawned on me that if 42% of the church women answered, “yes,” what must be going on among the women outside the church?

About one-half of the questions to “Ask Roger” are about sour relationships. Most of these are from women tormented in one way or another by the man in her life—or by the men and boys in her past?

Last week I received an insightful poem from a woman abused. She shares of her shattered life, and of the hope and wholeness that came from the Lord Jesus Christ.

(I’ve made several small editorial changes—Roger)

She once laughed with abandon;

but now she’s scared to feel joy.

She cringes at the sounds of his coming.

Tears fill her eyes:

she knows that no matter how she tries,

she’ll never be good enough,

pretty enough,

or smart enough,

for the one who thinks that he’s perfect.

She puts up her invisible wall,

and he wonders why.

She cries rivers of tears,

and he steps right over them,

afraid that his feet might get wet.

Sometimes she prays for his demise—

lost in wicked imaginings.

At the same time prays for her soul.

Sometimes she prays to be gone—

finally she would be free.

When he soaks her in poison,

she prays it won’t seep into her soul...

for she knows she’s better than this.

She gives until she’s spent.

She loves ‘til she’s depleted.

She once sang with angels,

but her voice is now stilled.

A girl forgotten and unloved,

abused and beaten,

pushed away and shoved.

How are some girls worth fighting for…

while I’m all alone…bleeding on the floor.

I cried, “God, where are you?! Rescue me!”

and finally He came.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit”

(Psalm 34:18).

1> Right on the money as usual, Roger!
I am male, but as a kid I suffered from harsh parenting and bullying at school. At age 62, I am still dealing with the after-effects.

Of greater grief to me is my abusive behavior to others, especially to girls and women. If I were ever again to do something I did to a girl when I was 13, I hope I would have the guts to turn myself in to the police, and to tell the court to lock me up for as long as they saw fit. And I know that my wife would support that decision.
2. I've been waiting a long time to get this off my chest:

There is a certain Christian leader. So you'll know exactly who I'm talking about: He holds a PhD in New Testament, and he leads a school from which we both graduated.

I heard him speak in 1974, and was charmed by him. Either he was hiding a dark side all along, or he has changed for the worst. He has done some despicable things. The worst, in my book:

Several years ago, several Christian women and teenage girls publicly accused a dynamic young Baptist preacher sexually abusing them. This guy was a friend and protege of the Rev. Dr.
Not content to deny that friend was guilty, big Dr. P publicly libeled these women and girls.
Lo and behold, Mr. Dynamic preacher was indicted, tried, and convicted, and is serving a prison term. Has Dr. ever admitted that he was wrong? Has he ever apologized to his sisters in Christ? Not to my knowledge. If he has, would someone please inform me.

By what possible criterion is such a man fit to lead God's people??? Whyis he being tolerated? Should he not be removed, and if he does not repent, forced to live out his remaining years in ignominy and shame?

our thoughts and advice would be appreciated by me, and I'm sure by others.

In the interest of full disclosure, and as an urgent prayer request:

The man to whom I referred in the above posting was Dr. Paige Patterson, President of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

The Spirit convicted me that I should contact both sides, and get their side of the story. Accordingly, I emailed Dr. Patterson on May 3, 2012. He replied on May 4.

The reply was gracious in tone, and nondefensive (for sheer literary prowess, few prominent Christian leaders equal him.) Nevertheless, I am not satisfied with it.
This matter has been a source of pain tothousands of God's people. It desperately needs a public resolution.

Within the next few days, I will likewise contact Dr. Patterson's accusers.

Dr. Patterson, his accusers, and the thousands of onlookers very much need your prayers. Please include me in those prayers.

Back in the 1960s there was a newspaper cartoon called "Church Chuckles." It was drawn by a pastor. It always featured a pastor either preaching a sermon or interacting with a parishoner.

One cartoon featured a pastor in a pulpit. He said:IN RUSSIA I'D BE SHOT FOR SAYING THIS, BUT AT LEAST I'D GET SOME KIND OF REACTION!

THAT IS EXACTLY HOW I FEEL ABOUT THE ABOVE TWO COMMENTS I POSTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

COME ON, GENTLE READER! MAN UP! SHOULD I HAVE EVEN SUBMITTED THE FIRST COMMENT? HOW ABOUT THE SECOND?

ROGER, YOU HAVE KNOWN ME FOR 35 YEARS. YOU WERE MY PASTOR FOR ABOUT 13 OF THEM. WHAT IS YOUUR TAKE ON IT?

What he did is despicable and ought to be punished and dealt with accordingly.
Unfortunately, as far as i can determine, he has no one to whom he is accountable so there is no one in position or authority who can or will deal with this.
