Life-Altering Words

01/21/10

Have you ever had an "ah-hah" moment? Was there a time when a single sentence shaped your life's direction? Here are some impactful quotes that shaped our nation. "Our lives being to end the day we become silent about things that matter."- Martin Luther King President Barack Obama's most oft-quoted words are the following: "Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek."

Even TV guru Oprah Winfrey occasionally speaks home-spun wisdom: "My philosophy is that not only are you responsible for your life, but doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment."

Powerful words shape history. Some say it was a pinnacle that pushed reconciliation over the top and got it moving again toward resolution. Some might say the words still echo.

I was reading in Proverbs today – came across Proverbs 18:20-21 in the NLT version:

Words satisfy the soul as food satisfies the stomach; the right words on a person’s lips bring satisfaction. Those who love to talk will experience the consequences, for the tongue can kill or nourish life.

As we contemplate the words that float from our lips – do we stop to consider the weight of that last statement? If we’re honest – we’ve been on the receiving end of both extremes. I know I’ve been the one to deliver both.

I’m reminded of Martin Luther King’s speech today. After watching it again, you can hear the nourishment of his words. Words said in a moment in time that brought revival for a future. Words that freed many, fostered hope in many more and words that still resound ~ because there is power in words.

Words have a way of echoing within our soul not just for a moment – but we carry them around. Some of you might be carrying words that are killing you from the inside out – you need to let go of them…they don’t have to hold you captive. Replace them with the words of life. The words of Jesus. John 14 & 15 are yours as a follower of Jesus.

There is power in your words today. They hold the power to nourish & repair or the power to stifle & wound.

Speak life-giving words…

Do you have any words of life that echo around within your soul? favorite verse or comment from someone that has stuck with ya? (post a comment)
