Jan Shrader is a preacher’s kid who attended six schools in six years because, as she jokingly points out, her father believed in the myth of greener pastures. From a young age she felt the call of ministry on her life, but because she was a woman she wasn’t always sure how to navigate that call. Her senior year of college she met the love of her life, Gary Shrader. They married and together they have served at Casas Church in Tucson for 33 years.
Jan is passionate about teaching the Bible for life change. Whether teaching in front of large or small groups, writing, or mentoring other women and Bible teachers, Jan has seen lives transformed through genuine biblical community. When women experience God’s Word healing their wounds and then see him using them to reach back to those still trapped in darkness, lives are reborn.
“People have often asked me what my favorite passage in the Bible is. I find it an interesting question, because if I am honest, my favorite passage is always the one I am currently studying. I have never once tired of dissecting God’s word and when given the opportunity to look at an old familiar section I am always amazed at God’s fresh insights. This is part of the miracle of the Word of God; it is always relevant to what is happening in our lives even if it is a part of the Bible we could quote from memory.”
As a native of Southern Arizona Jan’s roots run deep in the desert southwest. She loves hiking and camping in the mountains of Southern Arizona and finds the challenges of gardening with little water and cactus exciting. Jan has an undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona in Elementary Ed. After raising three amazing sons God allowed Jan to fulfill a lifelong dream by attending seminary. She graduated in May of 2008 from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary with a master of theological studies and was awarded the Buren Higdon Leadership Award in recognition of effective ministry leadership and interpersonal skills. Jan has been faithfully teaching women the Bible for over 25 years.
