We've all been there-snapping photos of wiggly preschoolers clothed in white bedsheets and tinsel halos as they warbled about shepherds, angels, sheep and stars. The baby in the manger was 75% off at Walmart. Still, the mystical revelation of God in an infant's body startles and humbles those of us who seek a Savior. Theologians call these supernatural visitations numinous events. Are they fact or fantasy? The Bible teaches God in His supernatural power dipped His finger in our natural world and gave us a glimpse of the spiritual realm. The supernova star over Bethlehem was a numinous event. Numinous events build our faith. They are not fantasy, but they are fantastic!
Very often, numinous events are few and far between in our everyday lives. However, God's fingerprints were all over the birth of Christ. His messengers were not chubby cherubs-they were mighty messengers surrounded by laser-like glory.
Gabriel, chief of God's angelic hosts, announced a young virgin would bear the Son of God. He would be David’s heir, and His kingdom would last forever. Joseph was told by the angel in Matthew 1:22 that Jesus would be Immanuel-“God with us", and He would pay the price for our sin. At the manger, the angels told the shepherds that Jesus was Savior, Christ and Lord of heaven and earth. Stunning, spectacular angel choirs chanted (nobody ever said they sang!) "Peace on earth, good will towards men." The final angelic visitation was the warning of the angel to Joseph to flee to Egypt to avoid Herod’s wrath, and to subsequently return in safety.
We know these "fantastic" creatures-warring angels, ministering spirits sent to serve, and worshippers around God's throne will be in the Final Fantasy, when Jesus returns with his heavenly hosts at the end of time. We will join their songs in heaven as they cry "Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come."
