What If? and If Only?
"The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have  and  enjoy life, and have it in abundance " John 10:10 AMP "What if" or "If only" are phrases used in counterfactual thinking. In other words, "the thief" is Satan and He comes to destroy your present by filling you with regret over your past or fear of your future. Counterfactual thinking is the behavior that asks those two questions to steal your joy and peace. CFT can be both positive and negative....

Don't Dwell on the Past. Be a Goldfish.
18  So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever. 2 Corinthians 4:18 NLT I saw the following statement on the front of a T-shirt (a notable and always reliable source of profound information).  A goldfish is the happiest animal on earth because it has a 10-second memory. The statement is false (scientific studies debunk the idea), but it does...

How to Begin Meaningful Conversations
Years ago, I observed that if left undirected, many conversations among groups of people are awkward, trivial, and unbalanced. This first became clear to me when I met with a group of older men who had been meeting together once a week for years. I assumed that because they had met so often that they knew each other well. But I soon realized that they had never talked about serious issues of life; they just repeated the same conversations about the weather, sports, and news. Two of the men...

A Time to Speak and a Time to Be Quiet
Ecclesiastes chapter three is a good commentary on time. The first sentence is: . Then it lists 14 situations in which we often must choose between two legitimate but opposite actions. For example, there’s a time to plant and a time to uproot, mourn and dance, pursue peace or make war. There is a proper time for each action. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the following phrase (which is one of the 14 mentioned) and trying to incorporate it into my life: It’s an important life lesson...

Don't Let Painful Experiences Cripple Your Life
James 1:2-3: 'Dear brothers, is your life full of difficulties and temptations? Then be happy, 3  for when the way is rough, your patience has a chance to grow. 4  So let it grow, and don’t try to squirm out of your problems. For when your patience is finally in full bloom, then you will be ready for anything, strong in character, full and complete.' LB The hot-stove effect was first proffered by humorist Mark Twain: “We should be careful to get out of an experience only the wisdom that is...

Worship is a Lifestyle
Worship's Scope   "When they saw Him, they worshiped Him" (Matthew 28:17)   The scope, or extent of worship can be both wide or narrow. In one sense everything we do that gives glory to God is worship. Paul said, "Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God) (1 Corinthians 10:31, NAS). So every act that is within His perfect will and performed with a pure heart could be considered worship. Washing the dishes, mowing the lawn, even the mundane functions...

Speak Up
"The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion" Proverbs 28:1 KJV Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. —Hitchens A woman checked into the hospital to have a tonsillectomy, and the surgical team erroneously removed a portion of her foot. How could this tragedy happen? In fact, why is it that ninety-eight thousand hospital deaths each year stem from human error? In part it’s because many healthcare professionals are afraid to speak their minds. In this...

Listen
"Know this, my dear brothers and sisters: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to grow angry." James 1:19 CEB Being heard is so close to being loved that for the average person, they are almost indistinguishable. –David Augsburger It’s the greatest thought on communication I’ve ever heard. It will heal and deepen relationships. Master this mantra and you’ll do well in life; ignore it and you’ll frustrate yourself and others. Stephen Covey said, “Seek first to...

Smile
"A heart full of joy goodness makes a cheerful face, But when a heart is full of sadness the spirit is crushed." AMP A man without a smiling face must not open a shop. —Chinese proverb About every two years I reread Dale Carnegie’s terrific book, How to Win Friends and Influence People . Though written 90 years ago (1926), it is so rooted in basic human psychology, it still speaks to our modern age. He taught seminars based on the book to large audiences in New York City. Carnegie...
