The Role of Angels in the New Earth
Under God’s direction, angels serve us on Earth ( Hebrews 1:14 ). Michael the archangel serves under God, and the other angels, in various positions, serve under Michael ( Daniel 10:13 ;  Revelation 12:7 ). In Heaven, human beings will govern angels ( 1 Corinthians 6:2-3 ). It’s a bit difficult to know the role angels will have on the New Earth. I assume they will be visible, though even that’s not certain. Presumably, their role as servants of those who will inherit salvation (though on the...

Rise Above: Hopeful Hymns Penned During Pandemics
Plagues and suffering have often produced the greatest hymns of hope, help and joy! Read the lyrics of songwriters who rose above darkness, depression and disease by singing praise. See what you can learn from these men and women of faith who praised and thanked God during disease. Perhaps you will be inspired to write your own song of praise! Miriam, sister of Moses, witnessed the ten terrible plagues of Egypt. God spared His people from disease and death. After the Jews’ divine rescue,...

Roger and the Bullet-Proof Vest
I never dreamed how many sermons my husband would preach in a bullet-proof vest (36 in all). I never dreamed I would have to wear one myself. My missionary friends in the Middle East are always under siege, but I assumed that church was a safe place. But after my husband preached forty-five sermons in the itchy bullet-chaser, I have learned differently.   My most vivid memory was recalling the escapades of a looney husband of one of our members. He was probably schizophrenic and definitely...

Is There Just One Soul Mate for Every Person?
Dear Roger and Julie, My sister and I were talking about how people fall in love. I think that there are numerous choices we can make and still have a successful marriage. I know that you believe that there is only one true soul mate for every person. What do you think and why? Sincrely, Kelly Dear Kelly, I don’t think that God has just one way of bringing two people together. The Bible has various examples of how He works. Roger, my husband, and I preached a sermon on this topic and we...

What Did Jesus REALLY Write in the Sand?
Dear Roger and Julie, I have had so many pastors give me more questions than answers about what Jesus wrote in the sand when the adulterous woman was about to be stoned. Is there a way to know what He did and what it meant? Sincerely, Curious Dear Curious, I have preached on this passage many time, but my wife Julie did a deep dive into what the incident could have meant. Here are her thoughts. Preachers have provided us with a plethora of postulations. I think I have a pretty definitive...

How Can I Know If My Teen Is Using Drugs?
Ask Roger and Julie I suspect my teenage daughter is using drugs. Her behavior has changed drastically. She is unmotivated, rebellious, and secretive. How can I know for sure, and what can I do about it? Sincerely, Scared Mom Dear Scared Mom, We are so sorry for your worry and disappointment. Navigating the adolescent years is challenging for any parent; believe me, we know. Roger and I had the opportunity to raise two daughters. You desperately want to keep them safe from danger, and yet,...

Your Paralyzing Shame Spiral: How to Climb Out!
Have you ever been sucked into a shame spiral? Nasty stuff. Shame is a fear-based state accompanied by feelings of being unworthy and unlovable. You may feel powerless, abandoned, worthless. Shame is as old as Adam and Eve. They sniffed the garden flowers, yakked with the serpent, chewed the forbidden fruit, and oops! They realized they were naked! After their shocking discovery, the couple patched together leafy skivvies, and hid from God. Sin and shame covered them simultaneously. Have you...

Criticism and Satan, the Accuser
How do you handle criticism? How does one protect himself from the "scourge of the tongue" (Job 5:21)? If you are going to be successful in the Lord's work, you must find God's hiding place from one of the most painful weapons in Satan's arsenal: the critical tongue. The fact is, for better or for worse, people are going to talk about you. You cannot do the will of God without causing changes, and changes will always cause some to stumble. In fact, Jesus said we were to beware when all men...
