Message #1 / 1 Samuel 15-16

David: A Man In Need Of A Hero

Setting the scene:

1 Samuel 15

To reject OBEDIENCE is to reject God’s WORD.

To reject God’s WORD is to reject His AUTHORITY.

To reject God’s AUTHORITY is to reject GOD HIMSELF.

Simply put, Saul has chosen himself as KING.

Is there true REPENTANCE without REMORSE?

What worth is a KINGDOM without the WORD?

The true hero takes over:

1 Samuel 16, Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, 2 Chronicles 16:9, John 15:18-25

There is a time to MOURN and a time to MOVE FORWARD.

Sometimes God needs to save us from our SAVIORS.

Irony: Kings and cultures will reject the very SALT and LIGHT

sent to DELIVER them.

Observations from the opening scenes:

The true King will never LOSE CONTROL of His Kingdom,

or be SURPRISED by yours.

If we want to have real SIGNIFICANCE and IMPACT,

we will focus on our HEART,

not on what others SEE.

Food for Thought for the week of January 9, 2022

1. During the kickoff of the new sermon series, Chris shared a few observations we could reflect on from the beginning of

David’s story. David’s life will reveal his ongoing struggle with feeling significant. Can you think of someone in your life who

recently has made you feel important, seen or valued? Was there anything out of the ordinary they did to make you feel that

way?

The good news is that we don’t have to earn our worth because, as children of God, we have significance. How do the

following passages reinforce your sense of significance?

Ephesians 2:10 New International Version (NIV)

10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Jeremiah 29:11 New International Version (NIV)

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you

hope and a future.

Psalm 139:13-14 New International Version (NIV)

13 For you created my inmost being;

you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

your works are wonderful,

I know that full well.

2. The weekend’s message challenged us to redirect our focus to the development of our heart versus our outward identity.

Chris pointed out how Saul focused almost exclusively on his outward identity while David demonstrated a great commitment

to developing his heart. What do you learn about how David engaged in developing his heart from the following verses?

Psalm 26:2 New International Version (NIV)

2 Test me, LORD, and try me,

examine my heart and my mind;

Psalm 51:10 New International Version (NIV)

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,

and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Psalm 19:14 Psalm 51:10 New International Version (NIV)

14 May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart

be pleasing in your sight,

LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Psalm 139:23-24 New International Version (NIV)

23 Search me, God, and know my heart;

test me and know my anxious thoughts.

24 See if there is any offensive way in me,

and lead me in the way everlasting.

What are a few ways you could work on developing your heart in this new year?

Welcome to this first message on the life of David, but we have to warn you that if you grew up just hearing about his stories in Sunday School, then this adult version may be a whole lot different than what you expect. David will not turn out to be the hero in this story, but rather a living example of how our pride, passions, and priorities can lead us far from the life that we desire the most. Sermon begins at 11:19.
