Psalm 27: Conquering Fear and Trusting God

David faced fear his whole life, and his only confidence was in God himself.

Think about it, a middle-school boy with some scraggly sheep sees a mountain lion or a bear. He's got a club and a slingshot. Wouldn't you be scared?

Then he faced nine-foot Goliath. He is a young teenager, who annoyed his brothers. They mocked him. He took a slingshot and five stones and cut off his head. That had to be scary at first.

20-year old David fought in the Israeli army. He was touted as killing 10's of thousands in hand-to-hand combat. That had to be scary.

But then he faced a terrifying enemy he never expected, King Saul. When he left Saul, he left behind his best friend and his wife.

David fled from Saul for almost a decade (7-10 years). Saul hunted him like an animal to Nob, the place where the tabernacle stood (Psalm 52) where he wanted to seek God's will, grab Goliath's sword and beg for bread for his starving men. He was chased to caves of Adullam, the wilderness of En Gedi, and finally to Philistine territory where he had to pretend to be a madman to gain entry.

Psalm 27, a psalm written by David, is an example of Hebrew poetry. Instead of rhyming words, David rhymed thoughts.

THE LORD IS MY LIGHT AND MY SALVATION: WHOM SHALL I FEAR?

THE LORD IS THE STRENGTH OF MY LIFE: OF WHOM SHALL I BE AFRAID?

Light is utilized to see and be aware of one's surroundings amid the darkness..

"I am the light of the world" (John 8:12), He is claiming that deliverance from darkness comes through God. Salvation, as seen in Psalm 27:1, can also be thought of as deliverance. David utilizes three terms to describe God as the Deliverer: light, salvation, and stronghold. If God is David's Deliverer, whom should he fear?
